Under his calm surface, Ethan was silently grinding his teeth. He
had just arrived to the family’s residence in the remote parts
of Northumberland to celebrate Christmas. This was a welcoming break
from the military daily routine as an officer in Her Majesty's Armed
Forces and in a way it would be nice to get away from the brigade,
which was stationed in Newcastle for the winter. Or at least so
he had tried to convince himself on his way in the uncomfortable
horse carriage, however already during tea time, he had started
to regret his decision.

About
this story
I will happily admit that the short story “The Governess”
was slightly influenced by one of my favourite romance and Gothic
Victorian novels: “Jane Eyre” by Charlotte Brontë.
For those who have not yet read it: I envy you. (And for those of
you who have read it: you know what I am talking about).
I always try to do some historical background research and this
time it included folklore and superstition, 19th century Christmas
celebrations, and the myth regarding succubus. The footnotes in
the Penguin Classic edition of Jane Eyre also helped me understanding
the special social hierarchy and status of being a governess.
I hope you will enjoy reading this story as much as I liked writing
it!
