“Lucas Berkeley paused to light the drip candle before he climbed the narrow staircase that led to the attic of the townhouse he had rented for the last decade at Paddington in London.

The candle flickered a couple of times before it took fire and burned more strongly. Tiny particles of dust danced in the last sunlight of the day from the small rectangular window at the short end of the room, but most of the room rested in shadows.

The smell of mould and soot from the brick chimney were quite distinct, and it tickled his nose.”
